The sounds of Norway
The following is a small collection of Norwegian swearwords, or words that
can be utilized in a swearing context. (Pluss one non-swearword sounding
much like one the swearwords. This has been provided so you can learn the
difference.) The .wav files are linked from the appropriate words in the
text, and can also be obtained as a single zipped archive. This page
will expand in the future so check back in a week. If you have any
requests, do send them to me.
- Faen. (Same word, different file: Faen2.) In a
dictionary it will be written as Fanden, and it literally means "the
devil".
- Helvete is norwegian for Hell.
- Jævel means devil. Not the
devil, just any old redskinned, horned, pitchforkwielding denizen
of the netherworld.
- Javel is an affirmative, used
like OK, I just put it in here so you learn not to confuse it with
the previous insult.
- Kødd means, depending on
where you're from, testicle, or penis.
- Pokker is an euphemism for
Kopper, the disease Pox.
- Rævva is a less than PC
word for butt and is often used as sort of an
adjective.
- Rasshøl means Asshole.
- Pikk = dick
- Fitte = cunt
- Jævla is an
adjectivization of Jævel and goes well with almost any noun.
- Svarte = black. It's used in the
phrases
"Svarte helvete" and "Svarte faen" and by itself when you don't
want to use the whole expression but need to cuss. "Svarte faen"
could be missunderstood as a racist remark though, so be carefull.
All the wavs in one zipped file.
